Gabriel Lawrence- Organist

Born and raised in Music City, USA, Gabriel Lawrence’s music is a product of many diverse influences. As a child and throughout high school, Gabriel received piano instruction from Penney Frazee and Alex Zanetis. During high school, he led the music ministry at the church in which he grew up, Old Hickory Church of God. From high school, he went on to Belmont University where he studied music business for a time. He was also active in the university’s opera productions. Since college days, Gabriel has been afforded opportunities to sing at Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, Tennessee under the direction of National Cathedral Choirmaster Emeritus, Dr. Michael Velting as well as the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. In 2009, Gabriel moved south to Savannah where he accepted a position as choirmaster and associate organist at The Collegiate Episcopal Parish of St. Paul the Apostle. At the church, he oversaw direction of a 25 person all-volunteer choir, and provided piano and organ accompaniment for various services. During this time, Gabriel was also able to create his music in other venues such as the historic Kehoe House. He was also commissioned to write and record music for a short film, which premiered at the Savannah Film Festival. In Savannah, Gabriel remained active vocally as well, singing in the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus and serving as a choral scholar and tenor section leader at St. John’s Episcopal Church. He served a short time as music intern at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. For the last three years he has maintained a private piano and voice studio and spent some time teaching at Savannah Country Day School. Gabriel is the coordinator for Savannah Beer and Hymns and Albany Beer and Hymns. Gabriel and his partner Casey (who is also a verger at St. Patrick’s!) enjoy spending time making up their own descants to their favorite Anglican hymns as well as spoiling their Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Harlie and Gabriel.
